EFFECTS OF BURNOUT ON THE SERVICE-BASED SMALL BUSINESS OWNER

--

If you look around today, people are quite busy with their lives and professions. And amongst that, there are many people struggling in their professions as well. The pressure of meeting all demands exhausts one’s mind that further leads to mental and physical disturbance. This induces a higher risk of burnout.

Signs of Mental Exhaustion

What is a Burnout?

Burnout occurs due to prolonged mental stress. When you take stress for the long term that includes emotional, mental, and physical pain, it simultaneously leads to burnout. If you are an owner of a small business or a job that includes service, there are more chances of leading towards burnout due to work stress and cynicism and constant workload.

Symptoms of Burnout:

Just like any other disease or diagnosis, burnout may also show symptoms like:

  • Lack of energy/ change in sleeping cycles.
  • Headaches, stomachaches, loss of appetite.
  • Chronic stress.
  • The feeling of not being good enough.
  • Resentful and ignoring oneself.
  • Mental and Physical fatigue.
  • Procrastination.

Not only this, but one symptom may lead to many more symptoms. In chronic stress, people usually face fluctuations in their body functions too i.e High Blood pressures, restlessness, etc.

If you’re a working person or a small business owner, your mental health is definitely at stake. And due to that, your decisions can affect your business.

Causes of Burnout as a Business Owner:

While being a business owner, either on a big scale or a small one, you have to tackle loads of responsibilities daily and carry out your plans. While doing this, there are more chances to face burnout. Such as:

Aiming for the perfect: When you are performing a job or operating a business, one’s aim is to be perfect at everything. In the search for perfection, one works even harder than their ability and exhausts easily. This will consequently lead to burnout.

Dealing with clients/communication: You may have heard that communicating is the most vital key to success. Many times, the anxiety of dealing with clients or even communicating with your boss may cause an increase in stress levels. Elevated stress levels may cause mental disturbance and that will lead to burnout.

Neglecting oneself: Starting or running a business is a big deal. Many times, we are too indulged in maintaining our standards that we start to neglect ourselves. Sleep cycles are disturbed along with eating routines. This continuous ignorance may affect your health and make you weak, both physically and mentally. This is a common symptom of burnout.

Work-life disproportion: Everyone has their mental capacity to keep up with work. Some get tired early and some can work even past time, but that depends on their potential. Therefore, working too much may cause tiredness and you may not concentrate on other life activities such as spending time with family, going on vacations, etc; that are also equally important.

Depression: Depression is the main consequence leading to deteriorated mental health. Imagine if you’re sick, can you go to work? No. Exactly like your physical health, your mental health is an important factor. If you’re mentally disturbed, you may sense uneasiness and tiredness. That may act as an obstacle in your work and life in general. Due to this, your thinking and working abilities are affected that causes you to lag in your business. Increasing stress from failing can cause burnout.

How to Overcome Burnout?

Like every cure, we can overcome burnout too.

Healthy Routine: As Hippocrates says, “Health is the greatest of human blessings,” there is no denial of that. A healthy routine may include eating healthy and on time, regular exercise and walking for fitness, proper sleeping patterns, at least for 7 hours daily.

Seek Support: Always remember, you are not alone in this. Someone near you may have faced the same situation and recovered from it. There is the #1 burnout expert, Chantay Golson LPC, who specializes in supporting Service-based Small Business Owners and C-Level and above executives to overcome burnout.
Start over: It is never late to start over. Learn from your mistakes and start over with more devotion and a clear mind.

Take a break: Taking a break is always healthy. Distract your mind from stressful schedules to something that makes you cheerful; Reading, Traveling, Painting, Cooking, etc. It can be a stress reliever.

Planning things out: Planning an outline is always a better option when thinking of strategies and promotions. It is easier to follow a plan than relying on a cluttered mind.
